temp probe question 200

I have been told that the temp probe in the upper corner of my radiator (1983 244 GLT) is just a thermo switch that I can use to trip the relay to activate my e-fan conversion. My question is this. Exactly what does this temp probe activate? There is a red and green wire coming from it. Where do these wires go? Can I disconnect them to wire in my e-fan?

thanks - Bill

My 85 wiring manual shows the fan thermoswitch wired in series (inline) with the + lead to the fan motor. One side of the switch goes to the + side of the fan motor and the other side of the thermoswitch goes to the switched terminal on the fan relay. The relay should turn on whenever the ignition switch is on , which passes power to the thermoswitch, which then passes the +12V to the fan when the temperature rises and the switch closes. The fan motor is always grounded - you'll see the little black wire coming off the fan for ground.

    here's the giggle...

darn near every one of these switches I've ever seen has the open/close temps stamped right on the switch! Of course, in celcius.

look for something like 87/92 - that tells you that the switch closes when the temp gets above 92c and then opens when the temp drops to 87c

Thanks for the replies. Maybe I wasn't totally clear. My car originally had an engine driven fan and I am putting in an aftermarket e-fan. Does the thermo-switch trigger the aux fan in front of the radiator? I thought that this fan was activated by the a/c? Or is it both?

      thanks - bill
