Should I buy this 740? What are 740 vulnerabilities? I'm a 240 guy. 700

It's a 1990. Has 185k on it. One owner..they bought in Germany and had shipped to US. Has the spoiler package. 5 speed. The car drives very well and they're asking $1500. What is the going price? Gray color w/ cloth seats. The AC doesn't work and the headliner is in bad shape. The paint looks good. Are there any major differences between the 240s and 740s that I should be aware of? Thanks for the help.

Price about right. If radiator is original and has a plastic tank, replace it with all metal before it breaks where the upper radiator hose is clamped on. Normal for headliner to be shot.

Last Dec, I purchased an '87 745 (wagon) on Ebay. Car had 123K miles. I had to replace some trans seals that were seeping and my drive shaft bushing has some seepage now. However, these are typical wear items for 240/740 lines. The headliners last about 7-10 years (mine is just beginning to sag ans costs $ 100-350 to replace depending on if you do it yourself, have a sunroof or wagon or opt to have someone else do it.

My only regret is that I did not buy a 740 earlier. The differences in the suspension (740 and 940 rear suspension are same and a bit different from the 240; front suspension has a two piece control arm vs. the one piece in the 240), seats, soundproofing, cooling, etc. make for a marked improvement over the 240. This '87 740 is my most comfortable brick!

I'd get an inde Volvo mechanic to check it out and purchase it if he/she says it's good.

The price is right and the car should be worth that if it starts, stops and runs well (should look decent cosmetically). The A/C probably needs charged and the headliner is a common flaw for 740's. Overall, the 740 is a much easier car to live with, I believe - better ride, more comfortable interior and parts are no more than 240's. I recommend one.....
