77 264 Anniversary Edition - How rare is rare and what's it really worth 200 1977

My brother called me and said his friends uncle was selling a rare 70's Volvo and he knew I was looking for one. I was hoping for a 242GT or a Bertone. What I found was a lackluster 264 with an interesting history.
This is a limited edition of 500 50th Anniversary 1927-1977 264. This was only available to select dealers who sold the most cars for that year. He bought it new from a local dealer from a salesman who owed him a favor from back during Vietnam. He had a green 164 he traded in for it.
The car has the PRV 2.7 V-6 and an automatic. This scares me!
It does have the GT alloy wheels and gold & black stripes and a faded silver pant job. It also has the dash plaque and 1927-1977 symbols all over it.
He seems to think the car is worth 50 grand restored??? An identical 264 in the same shape would probably net $50. Especially with rust.
Would this worth buying for under 2 grand? It barely runs and hasn't been driven in almost 10 years. The front fenders and quarters are shot too.
I could restore this. I even have new fenders for it in my garage, but would this be worth my time. I really wanted a 242GT.
Need advice soon.
Ben

Reminds me of a local 87 240DL for sale... 200 1977

I dont; knwo if you guys recall, but I started on this site while looking for a 240 sedan for my GF. Well after looking around and coming up unsuccessful, I decided (after much internet research and consumer reports research), on a 97 Escort with a 5 speed tranny.
After changing every fluid (incl tranny and power steering system), the car has been runnig soo smooth and quiet, giving her much better performance than her previous 93 Corsica.
But back to the story, this Dr. wants 8000CAD for this thing claiming that it's "mint", yet the tranny doean't shift properly, the a/c doesn't work, the car has numerous cracks in the dash, and rust is starting around the wheels and there's leaks forming around the engine gaskets and the tranny too (probably from not being driven for soo long). There were proably other problems with the car too, but I didn't want to waste my 60-70 bucks on a rough inspection on a car that was clearly over priced.
It's now 3-4 months later and he still hasn't sold the car yet. I was actually willing on paying 6000 for this thing (it only has 68000kms on it).

He actually called me after, claiming that he'd sell me the car for 7000. I told him that we had already found another car. He said "well, I guess there's no reason for me calling you then...", I never responded.

the car went back into the paper recently for the same 8000CAD. my GF says that he "obviously doesn't need the $" ...I agreed

...what an idiot

My Van is even more of a rarity, and I towed it away for free in better condition that the 260 you're describing.

Thanks, I may offer up to $500 if I decide that I really want it. He probably wont sell it for that ammount anyway. He claims someone in the European Car Club is comming to look at it who is very interested in it. Funny, I never heard of a club in N.W. Ohio before.
I already have a 244 and it's the same color silver too. The rust issue isn't bad. The lower spare tire & quarters will have to be patched and I have a pair of new front fenders in my garage. The PRV motor is VERY SCARY. It will only start if he sprays quick-start into the throttle body and runs rough until it warms up. Even then it seems to lack power - like the cams could be worn flat (a common PRV problem). I doubt that it was maintained as well as mine. It's only got 60,000 on it and I just passed 225,000 on mine and it runs a world better than his. This is a guy who paid $700 for a tune-up on his Mercedes Benz. Maybe I'll just keep looking for that Checker Marathon I've wanted since the 1980's.

77 264 Anniversary Edition - How rare is rare and what's it really worth 200 1977

Surprisingly...

There was exactly one of those Anniversary 264's on eBay about a month ago. It was showroom (minus a couple of dents) right down to the original whitewall Michelins with 25,000 miles on the clock. In the end it sold for 5 grand. It would cost you at least that to get the car nicely painted (try to find that stripe kit...now that's laughable)let alone fix all the rust, fix whatever mechanical issues it had not to mention the PRV engine might be about ready to self destruct as they generally do.

As others have said, 50 to 150 would be reasonable provided that it drives nicely and doesn't need too much body work to be safe.

Is there an epidemic of crummy old GT's that for some reason people think are worth something??? There's some numpty 5 mins from me who's had a rotten 1980 GT with 300,000 km for the past 6 mos. The last time I looked it had a price of 1500 on the windshield.

77 264 Anniversary Edition - How rare is rare and what's it really worth 200 1977

Even more rare than my coupe numberswise, but only worth any amount of money in "as new" condition to a collector. How much, I have no clue.

Somewhat related, yesterday i saw a 81-ish Turbo Trans Am Pace Car replica on a truck transport. Yum.

Even better was my last trip to the Peterson Automotive Museum, where I spotted a factory rallyed-out late 70's Volvo station wagon. Not too often do you get to walk around in there and say "Oh yeah, I've got one of those". My wife about split her side laughing at me.

For 50 large, you could probably buy every remaining 264 on the face of this earth. Excepting this one, of course.

The value of this car in it's current condition is $50-$150.

I once looked at a GT like this. Ok, a RESTORED GT might be worth maybe $3000. I could have put $10,000 into that GT and had a car worth $3k. Big whoop. It was a PILE, and didn't even have alloys.

The fellow wanted a thou.

I laughed in his face.

"But it's a GT! They're rare!" he says.

"no, it's a collection of Volvo GT parts held together (somewhat) by a pile of rust"

No, it is nowhere near as appealing as a GT. Maybe if he gives it to you. 50 grand is a huge fantasy.
