230FT with AW71 in 240GL, sound good? (Aye Roll) 200

If I go ahead and replace the AW70 with a AW71. Would the 230FT be a hard swap for my 88 240gl? Anyone done this before? What would be a good donor car for such a conversion? Can I go ahead and get the donor car and turbo my current 230F (http://www.turbobricks.org/mods.php?content=turbo-addon) as mentioned in this article and drop in a rebuilt 230FT later. How similiar are these engines? Aye Roll: You mentioned your friends 89 244gl in a previous article with something similiar done, any suggestions? I think this is the best bet, I wanted to stay automatic, keep the GL style and add some horsepower. Any comments or suggestions appreciated.

I once saw a 83 245 turbo where the guy totally replaced the B21Ft with a 230FT from a 940 turbo. He had the disadvantage of going from Kjet to LHjet but he did it. The fact that he worked at a Volvo-only junkyard probably helped. If I were to undertake a project like this, I'd get a complete running donor car, (700-900 series) take lots of pictures, make lots of notes, and have lots of time to complete it. I'd think you're going to need the whole wiring harness, CPU and AMM out of the turbo car and there might be some interesting fabrication needed for the exhaust and intake system. Personally, I'm not a big fan of the f+t conversion. I haven't been over to Turbobricks in quite a while so maybe things are different now but every time I have read about one of these conversions, they did not seem to be as reliable or bulletproof as the original Volvo design. Show me a guy with 100K miles on a f+t with no problems and I might change my tune.

The F+T is a viable conversion, and agreed that a n/a +T is a risky combo when the motor already has a few hunderd k miles on it. The only way to obtain longevity is to re-build the B230F and slightly lower the compression and affix the turbo to a fresh engine with good bottom end bearings. It is also important that you select the low pressure versions of the B230F donor car. One in particular is the 760/780 smaller Garrett Turbo + kit that has overboost blow-off valving and runs at 8 psi. Just don't slap a Garrett from a B21FT on the old engine becasue you're setting yourself up for disaster.
