Electrical gurus:what is this black thing at back of alternator? 700

fcpgroton lists 2 100 amp alternators:
one with and one without this rectangular black thing, seems like an electrical connection of some sort.Is it a radio suppression relay?????Do i need it since i got 2 relays near the washer fluid bottle already??

    Its a voltage regulator!

    Yes you need it!

Bosch list's the part at $60-80 bucks but aftermarket ones are fine and a lot cheaper. I picked up a "HUGO" ? brand for $13.00 canadian at the local-local.

    Works just fine......

The round thing in the 5-oclock position of the 2nd picture (with BOSCH printed on it) is the Voltage Regulator. The square thing in the 9-oclock position of the same picture seems to be a capacitor.

Looks like a capacitor to me, the way it is connected, so it is a radio suppression device. Capacitors are cheap, so if there is no big difference in price take the one with the black thingy. Nothing so disturbing as when your radio reception is poor, IMHO

Do I need it though cos I have 2 relay(one a radio suppression device) near the radiator fluid overflow reservoir?
      thanks
