Something Sticking SU's Subsequent to Stop 444-544

'63 544

An intermittant engine hesitation started suddenly about a month ago. An oily substance was noticed in the fuel at a glass housed fuel filter between pump and carb. The filter element was replaced but quickly fouled again. Suspecting the pump diaphragm was leaking, the pump was replaced. There filter fouled again but not quite as quickly.

I then figured that some bad fuel (or some diesel mix) was being dispensed at a friendly service station. The fifth fuel filter element in three weeks seems to be staying clean. The engine hesitation is almost entirely gone and the car pulls strong under load.

The car still bogs after a quick decelleration to a complete stop. If the choke is pulled out, then the hesitation goes immediately away. The choke can then be let off and the engine is fine again until the next quick stop.

New: Plugs; Fuel Pump; Fuel Filter; Air Filters
Plugs and Points recently gapped
One entire can of carb cleaner applied to outside and inside of carbs.

Any suggestions as to what to check next are welcome.

Thanks,

Joe M

This really sounds like water in the gas. Don't be confused with an oily substance when it looks amber and is slippery and clots the fuel filter. This is what decomposed gas gets like after it turns to a varnish-like substance and when it mixes with water, can do damage to the entire fuel delivery system.
I would drain the fuel tank and pump a few quarts of fuel through the lines after a pint of alcohol is mixed with the gas. Drain again, then top it up with premimum gas and another pint of dri-gas or alcohol and put a new filter in.
The SU's can act very sticky with air/fuel mixture when the gas is going to varnish or there's water in the gas, so you may want to pull the pistons and clean the carb bodies with carb cleaner. If some crud gets up high in the air piston, spraying externally won't remove varnish that make a ridge at the top of the piston lift.

Only use gas dryer unless you have access to chemical reagents. Store "alchohol" is 70% water. Cheap whiskey is better for your car than that.

      Mike!

Thanks for the water in gas theory. I never would have guessed that the brown separated bubbles going through the filter were from gasoline gone bad. Its a shame because the entire fuel tank was replaced just a couple of months ago.

"the entire fuel tank was replaced just a couple of months ago. "

I think you might have provided your own answer to your problem.

Sorry... I don't know the history of your "new" tank but I was guessing that fresh petrol was loosening up the crud and varnish that might have built up in it. Hope you soon have it sorted.

              Derek:

No need to apologize. You were dead on in analysing my 122 key breakage problem and I appreciate your assistance. Once we found a good locksmith who made a key that turns when fully inserted, the ignition assembly works as expected.

The replacment tank was purchased from a trusted source but "refurbished" by an unknown party. The exterior of the refurbished tank has a black "tarry" coating. I don't know what, if anything was done to the interior.

The replacement tank has been in the car for a few months. The stumbling problem showed up at least six weeks after the tank was installed. The car was driven about 3000 miles during that six week interim between tank install and clogged filters. The car was performing excellently before the stumbling suddenly started on hard accelleration on a steep incline.
