smoke in A/C vents, and other issues... 900 1995

Hi There,

I am having a combination of problems, that I think may be related to one another. First thing, I am experiencing the (known) vacuum servo problem with my 1995 960. This is where the A/C cuts out at high acceleration. I have read the proposed solutions on the website and will take a look to see if I can solve that problem.

Perhaps more seriously, I am also noticing some sort of 'smoke' coming from the A/C vents, and it typically occurs in parallel with the A/C cutting out when I accelerate quickly: that is, there is more 'smoke' when the A/C is cutting out. It is not really smoke (hence the quotes), but it is also NOT condensation. It doesn't smell like smoke, but it smells a bit like... antifreeze or something.

Which brings me to my third problem (almost there!). I am losing coolant, and after an thorough test by my mechanic, there is no leak in the cooling system. Does this indicate a possible blown head gasket? Is it possible that it is related to the 'smoke' I get coming out of the A/C vents?

Finally (if you're still reading, I am impressed, and thankful), when it is hot outside (I live in southern california, so this means nearly all the time), and after the car has run for several miles, I hear this weird sort of whining sound when I accelerate really hard. It is hard to describe, but it sort of sounds like a siren off in the distance... "wheeeeeeewwwhhhh" is how it sounds. I am worried it may be the transmission... any ideas? I do not notice a correlation with the sound and any particular engine speed (or gear), but it does appear to only happen when I am accelerating quickly.

Wow. OK, thanks for any suggeestions, hints, etc. And please accept my apologies if these issues are addressed somewhere in the forum. I did some searching, but did not find what I was looking for.

Bryan

    Dear Bryan,

May this find you well. The "smoke" may be formed from coolant, leaking from the heater core.

If you have a blown headgasket, coolant mixing with the oil, will form a brownish foam, visible at the end of the dipstick, or inside the dome (inside the area below the oil filler cap.

If you tackle the failed ventilator actuator, you probably want to inspect the heater core and its hoses closely.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    spook

Sounds like vacuum leaks in the cooling system vent operating cylinders.
A few things that can be wrong: bad check valve in the hose from intake manifold to the vacuum reservoir in the dashboard.
A torn diaphragm in one of the door actuators in the dashboard. I've seen this personally. If this is the case, there could be so much of a leak that even with a good check valve, the reservoir gets depleted under acceleration.

Note that acceleration is a low-vacuum condition, and idle or deceleration is a high-vacuum condition. The reservoir gets charged up under high-vac and then the check valve is supposed to hold it for those times when you're accelerating. If the devices consume too much vacuum due to leaks, the reservoir is empty before you're done accelerating.

Also, this is likely the source of the noise. AS the reservoir empties, there's a hiss of air or a sighing sound. Vacuum leaks often whistle. Given the likely spot for the leaks, basically center bottom of the dash, next to your feet, it could sound "far away". I'd figure it's all related. With a flashlight you may be able to even see a tear in a rubber diaphragm up under there- I've seen it right where a shaft or rod exits the rubber.

    Good luck.

Great! Thanks to you both for the suggestions... I will check it out this weekend and post back when (if) I manage to find the problem.

I'll try to tackle the other problem the noise that your hearing. Sounds to me like your air pump coming on just like it's supposed to do. When driving at speed for a while then slowing down to a stop the computer turns on your air pump to take overly rich gasses from the system and pumps these gases into the exhaust system there by burning them. The whine you hear I beleive to be your air pump and it seems to be doing it's job.
