check engine light on, but Volvo runs fine? 200 1992

Have a mysterious problem with my 244. I was driving one day, and it almost stalls at a stop light. I pull it over, turn off and restart, check engine light stays on all the time now, but the car runs fine. Could this be an early-warning issue of something worse to come? Is there some things I can check before taking it in and spending all my paycheck to have the Volvo shop put it on the computer?

Reach under the drivers side dash on the back of the speedo and reset the check light.. It is a button to the right of the speedo.

Aye Roll is right that you should bone up on how to check the codes from your own computer. The FAQ will also shoe you how to reset (erase) your diagnostic codes. I suggest you reset it to 1-1-1, drive for a few days and then check for codes again. If your stall was a one time weirdness, the code from it will stay in your computer until you reset. If it doesn't come back though, you are good to go.

The 700/900 FAQ has instructions for reading the codes.
Most often it's something like the oxygen sensor going bad. Results may not say "failed O2 sensor" but rather something like "too rich or too lean at idle". Often kind of vague and then you have to guess what it causing it.

Give the engine a once-over for bad vacuum hoses, and make sure ignition parts are in good shape- cap, rotor, plugs, etc.
