weld a nut to the back of the broken key stub...I'd probably make a custom washer with a slotted hole first, tack it to the key, then weld a nut on for grip. I'd use a small wirefeed welder, but somone handy with the torch might be able to do it that way.

Others may have some help for you, and I've personally never done the job, but this has been a problem with these since that key design came out.
Trying to remove the lock cylinder with a broken key is almost impossible, and probably requires grinding or drilling in there to release it.
I'm surprised the dealer says they can't get the keys however- they can order them, with your key code, through the central Volvo warehouse. Takes a few days, but a new key is milled out to fit your locks.

PErhaps another call to the service dept and maybe a call to a locksmith to get out the piece of broken key, and you'll avoid junking the car.

Good luck.

Hi Rob
I have been told reliably by three dealers that a code-made key is not available for my '88 760T because the key code makes no sense. One parts counterman told me that someone sabotaged the company for a year without being caught--entering erronious key codes. I guess I will snag a steering column from the salvage yard next time I can, just in case...

You can take the whole steering column out even if the lock cylinder is locked. You can buy a set of replacement locks and steering column w/ ignition lock for about $200 from the Rancho Cordova guys.

A friend of mine went through a similar issue with his 88 764T. He bought it from a tow company with no keys. He broke a slide hammer and a few carbide tipped drill bits working the ignition lock out. For the remainder of the time he started the car with a screwdriver.

If you're willing to buy a new steering column, that's the easiest way to get a new lock cylinder.
