1984 240 Speedo head removal

How does one remove the cable from the speedometer on the 84? There are two interlocked plastic rings that hold it to the speedo, but i don't seem to be able to detache either one of them. Please help.

    It does just unscrew- but it may have a plastic locking ring that will break when you take it off. That was to prevent tampering with mileage originally. Kind of irrelevant 20 years later.
    The back of the speedo is just a spiral thread.
