I found that the Volvo roof rack on my '89 wagon had some problems where the screws go into the roof, and it is no longer firm. How can I firm up the roof rack?

The rack attaches to roof using 12 grommets available from Volvo dealers. These anchor it and also provde water seal. The flat rubber you see is not the seal. I prefer to replace them all if I can stand the cost.

One end of grommet has metal thread, the other not. If I recall, the threaded end goes down in hole. When inserted correctly, tightening the screw swells the rubber to seal against the hole.

Last time I changed some of those, the best way was to attach the screws and grommets to one "foot" on the rack, then press it down into position.

I suspect the rack has a front and a rear, be sure to put back on the same way so holes will line up.
