Fob-Horn... 120-130

Hello All:

1967 Volvo 122S Wagon. The horns do not work. The previous owner told me that there are a couple of foam donuts that need replacing and both horns will work great. Does anyone know where I can get these? I tried one on-line joint but they are apparently not up and running at this time.

Also, we only have one ignition key and one door key. We need to make some copies. Does anyone know where we can get genuine vintage Volvo key fobs?

Okay, one last question: the car does not have any outside mirrors. I want the genuine McCoy. Does anyone know where I can find a driver's side door mirror for a '67 122S Wagon?

Cheers,

Jeff Pucillo

I've asked about the mirrors before, seems there isn't an original type, and volvo just bolted whatever was around on. Back then side mirrors were an option as well so there are publicity stills with no side mirrors. Maybe no mirror is the most original mirror you can get for a 120.

There is indead an original mirror, and the most typical one is "unisex" and can be fitted in both left- and righthand side. Partno. 281497, the mirror was standard on cars for US and Canada market, from P 130 chassino. 279900-.

The mirror has just resently been remanufactured, around USD 100,-

This mirror is considered the "original" - in Europe this mirror was fitted as an option when ordering a car. In the early days ('62-'64) the wagon was fitted with a fender-mirror on righthand fender - this due to Sweden at that time drove in LHD vehicels, but traffic was RHD(!) (Sweden changed into LHD arround '70-'71 if I remember correct..)

      /Soren

(Before 67/68 there where a couple of options for mirrors, all specially fitted at delivery of the car to the customer.)

The picture shows the current original mirror (partno. 276614) - came in '73 and was fitted on the 140-series. The later mirror looks much like it, only the mirroarm was fitted in front of base and glas wasn't blue-toned and had no plastic-surrounding...

    Jeff;

Let's call that the "Krispy-Kreme sales pitch"!

I don't know where there are "a couple of foam donuts" in a 122 which have anything to do with the horn(s)!!!...MAYBE he meant the SINGLE foam spacer in the steering wheel which keeps the contacts of the grounding switch apart (Item 23 at http://www.gcp.se/catalog/P120_P130_P220(B18)/Section_03_page_016_2.gif), but if that fails, it will cause the contacts to close and the horns to sound, not remain silent...

I suggest you check your horn electricals...typical problems occur in the horn switch at the steering wheel, or the connections or horns themselves due to corrosion. See also: http://www.intelab.com/swem/hornupgrade.htm

Repro key blanks are available at well supplied locksmiths, or I have some...I can't help with originals...but I highly recommend a start switch upgrade to keep either one of them in one piece! See also: http://www.intelab.com/swem/service%20notes.htm#Body

    Cheers

    Hello Jeff...

Is the horn not making any noise at all? Or is it making too much (i.e. sticking)? Replacing the rubber ring will keep it from sticking, as I recently experienced when I got my '67 122 last month. I found the rubber ring in a "horn repair kit" on swedishclassics.com, but ended up improvising and fabricated the ring using 2 layers of double-sided rubber foam tape. Did the trick just fine. :)

Not sure about the keys, but I found mirrors on swedishtreasures.com when I was doing a search for those, too. Mine has a mirror, but it's the wrong one and is useless while driving.

    Best of luck!

    - Dan

IPD should sell those foam donuts. They also carry some vintage mirrors.

      Hello All:

Thanks, as always, for the helpful and timely responses.

Keys - great, I guess I have just been going to the wrong locksmiths. I do not care about actual "Vintage" key fobs from the '60's, but a repro that has the original shape and Volvo stampings sure would be nice. I am sure I will find some.

Horn - I probably misunderstood the previous owner, thinking that the foam donut was in the horn itself, not the steering wheel. If what Ron Kwas says is true then it sounds like my problem might very well be electrical and I will have to do some probing around.

Mirror - I will check IPD and also try to find the part number as recommended by Soren. Soren, I assume the number you gave me is for the '67 mirror, correct?

      Cheers,

      Jeff Pucillo

Btw: Old mouse pads make good foam donuts for the horn switch on the steering wheel...probably the previous owner disconnect the horns due continuated sound asociated to the failed old foam donuts.
