alternator trouble 1800 1972

From one problem to another...

Just got the vacume leaks repaired and along with the instalation of the crane cams xr700 ignation box my 1800E runs better than she ever has (at least in the two years of our relationship) the problem is that the car runs of the battery, the alternator will not recharge. I replaced the alternator, and voltage regulator and the AMP light on the dash stays on after ignition. Any sudgestions?

Thanks

    Problem Solved 1800 1972

Thanks for all the great leads. While testing some of them out it turned out to be a bum replacement altornator. I traded it in for a working unit and all is well again... for now at least.

Well, if it's not the alternator or regulator (and we know the amp light circuit is good), you have a wiring problem.

Check continuity of the field wire (DF). Check continuity of the B+ wire to the battery positive terminal. Double-check that the alternator and regulator are both grounded.

The for the '72 1800, the 55amp alternator is the propper replacement, right? not the 35amp verison?

Yep -- the fuel injection models automatically got the 55 amp alternator.

When you change from a 35 to a 55amp Alternator do you need to change the regulator? i.e. Do they each have a matching regulator?

That rings a bell to me. My PV got a new (er!) alternator system from the '73 145E it got it's motor from. After a little bit of use the tired old 35 amp'er gave out. I got a 55 amp replacement, hooked it up, and proceeded to have lots of weird symptoms, mostly resulting in dead batteries. I *finally* figured out that the new alternator had two separate outputs. One was left unhooked when I installed the alternator, and the regulator was carefully regulating the field strength so it would have 14 volts. This left the attached circuit woefully under charged. Adding a jumper between the two outputs made everything work perfectly.

No clue if this is pertinent in this case or not.

Did you check the condition of the ground strap . Grounds the engine to the frame,,I have seen these straps in poor condition and causing all sorts of problems.GOOD LUCK!
