Cracked Head (Photos enclosed) 200 1982

This cylinder head came from a 1982 244 GL with 180k miles. The engine looked ok, as did the rest of the car (except for fender damage). However, I cleaned the head and found cracks in every cylinderr: #1 and #4 had cracks between the valves, #2 and #3 had cracks between the spark plug threads and intake valves, #3 only had a crack starting from the intake valve and going half way to the spark plug thread. Here are photos. Is this head repairable?

Modern machine shops (at least some of them) have become quite adept at welding cracks in aluminum heads. That said, it isn't cheap, and will cost more than purchasing another good used head. It isn't worth repairing, although it is possible.

I agree totally. This head has been abused, whether due to overheating, excessive pinging/knocking, being run out of oil or whatever. For whatever reason, the 82's seemed to be susceptible to cams seizing in the heads. SOme kind of oiling problem corrected with better oil galleys in later units.
Buy a good used head for about $100-150 and no worries. Any later head will work.
