M40 / M41 crossmember differences 140-160 1972

I read that the M40 / M41 are not the same.
What was different on the crossmember? I'm getting close to initiating the M40 to M41 swap into my 144 and thought I had everything covered. I thought the crossmembers were the same. Pretty sure they are for a BW35 and M40.
Can a M40 crossmember be modified to fit the M41? Arg! Always something.

If Matt is out there, any chance you can post a picture of the overdrive stalk switch that I inquired about a couple of weeks ago? I'd like to see where the factory cut the steering column cover before I butcher mine.

Thanks

After taking the M40 crossmember out about 10 times for additional removal of in the way steel, I made it work with an M41. It would be much easier if you could find the right one. I am hoping that I didn't undermine too much integrity of my crossmember by all the hacking. About 10K ago so ok for now.

I would think you would be able to modify a non-overdrive crossmember... It just has to be thinner such that it fits between the gearbox and overdrive. The mount is at more (or less) of an angle.... almost sits in there sideways, which means transmission mounts ain't gonna last as long with the overdrive.

I'll see if I can get a picture of that switch and housing... as usual, the car and the camera are at different places right now, but I can fix that I reckon...

The cross section of the 4-speed crossmember is sort of crescent-shaped
while the OD crossmember is more like an upside-down V so it is just as
stiff but not as far front-to-back. More space for the OD housing.
