Bad power steering leak 200 1978

Really bad PS fluid leak on my 1978 244. Jacked the front end up to get a better look at where it's coming from. With the motor running, and the wheels pointing straight forward, there's no leak. But once I start moving the steering wheel back and forth at all, fluid begins pumping out on the driver's side. Hard to tell exactly what the source is, but it seems to be coming out the back of the rack and onto/thru the rear control arm bracket.

Any thoughts as to what may have failed, to cause this? (I've never seen a PS rack off the car, so I'm not sure how it works or where the fluid is pumped around inside.) Bottom line: am I probably looking at needing a new rack? Or does this sound more like a pump issue?

In the meantime, I'm driving the car only when necessary...and carrying several bottles of ATF with me everywhere.

Is the pump mounted up high or down low? Is the reservoir integral with the pump or remote? Do you mean the fluid is coming out of a particular part or just running off it? Could it be a hose leaking from above? I recommend going to a car wash and spraying the entire system, top and bottom, pump, hoses, every component. Dry the area the leak may be coming from with a rage or paper towel. Start and turn the wheel just enough to cause wetness at the point of the leak. Wipe again to confirm the exact location.

I agree with Jay...95% it's rack seals...get a rebuild by mail...around $200 exchange. Do-able in a driveway, but worth the extra $200 for professional install...even a tire/brake shop could do it.

Good Luck
-Dennis
