Draining the differential '87 740GLE

I tried to drain the differential on my 1987 740GLE auto by loosening the lower bolt on the diff cover, as sugested in the FAQ, and no fluid came out. Looks like I will need to remove the differential cover which will necessitate a new gasket which brings up the question: Are all 1987 740 (auto) differentials the same or was there more than one differential type?
Thanks
Jorge

You could try using one of those big metal syringe type units to suck out the fluid.
That's what I did on my 240.

Does the 740 have the speedo sensor in the dif?
If so, then you may have to re-shim it when you replace the dif cover gasket.

Syringe is easier.

BTW: Watch out if you put sythetic gear oil in there. It may exagerate any drive shaft seal leak. Had that happen too.

Bert
