240 won't start 200

Hey Guys,

Still no luck getting the '86 240 wagon to start. I changed the ignition switch this weekend. The timing belt isn't broken either, I can see the cam rotate when the engine is cranked. The engine spins over normally, but doesn't catch. There's spark, too. The fuel pump is working, I can hear it. Also, the thing that really bothers me is that none of the dash lights are coming on when the key is in the 2 position (none of the lights under the gauges are lighting up).

I'd really appreciate any ideas or suggestions.

Dave

    1. Check if you have power to the computer unit located at the passenger's right side panel. There is a red cable that goes from the battery positive pole to a fuse located at the left fender side, close to the coil unit. This red wire gives power to the computer of the car. Is the red cable/wire attached to the battery?, if not, reconnect it. Check if the cable is not loose, looking under the fuse attachment. Sometimes with the vibration its become loose or disconnected from that fuse. Check if the fuse is not blown.
[I had the same problem and a friend of mine(which is a good mechanic for imported cars), told me to check that cable or check if the fuse wasn't blown. If the computer does not receive power the car won't start. It will crank forever.]

    2. There is a neutral switch on the transmission shift(if your car is automatic) that you need to check also. If the switch is damaged, the car won't start.

Do you mean the control unit that's mounted over by the windscreen washer reservoir? I'll check that and see if there's power. If the neutral safety switch was bad on the transmission, it wouldn't turn over would it?

      Thanks,
      Dave

I had basically the same problem. I had to crank the car for 2-3 minutes till it would fire up.

After many ideas from different people I accidentaly discovered the "Check Valve" . If this valve is not functioning then your car won't start (87 240 DL) anyway. It's located between the 2 and 3 injectors and has a vacuum line going to it then it goes into the manifold. I removed the Vacuum line and and a friend put his finfer over it and the car starts instantly. The thing is that the line cannot remain plugged or the car stalls out. I went to volvo and the check valve is $8.00 US and I am ordering it today. I bought a fuel pump as everyone said that was it. I will probably install the new pump anyway.

This was a problem for a month and was a tough one for me to diagnose.

    I hope this helps!

I'll give the check valve a try. This could also be the problem with my car. I haven't tried to crank it over for much longer than a couple of spins. My battery just can't go much longer than that. Speaking of batteries, what is the correct size for the 240? The PO of my car put in a battery that's much too large and comes close to touching the hood when it's closed. I'll probably replace with an Interstate soon.

      Thanks for the suggestion,

      Dave

Good luck and hope it starts right up !

I'm not sure on the battery size, sorry.

Don't overlook the basics. All it needs to start is fuel, compression, and a properly timed spark. Take off the top cover of the timing belt and make sure that when you bring the engine to TDC#1 the camshaft marks align. (straight up),also pop off the distributor cap and make sure that the rotor points at the #1 terminal. If all this checks out, make certain that the big hose(bellows) between the air flow meter and the throttle body is intact (no cracks) and that the hoses comming from the throttle body are connected. To make sure that the injectors are firing, You can use a mechanics stethescope or just a long screwdriver. Place one end at the base of the injector. and the other against your ear. Have a friend crank the engine, you should hear a click-click-click from each of the four injectors. Also check the 25 amp fuse located on the driver side of the engine compartment (near the battery) . Good Luck

      Poorgie,

I'll check the injectors and see if I can hear them click. The fuel pump is also working. I got one of IPD's fuse holder kits for the main fuse beside the battery. Also, the cam marks and dist'r rotor align correctly. I just keep coming back to the fact that none of my dash warning lights are coming on when the key is on. Compression is also up to spec on this car. Could something be wrong with the ECU?

      Cheers,
      Dave

"I just keep coming back to the fact that none of my dash warning lights are coming on when the key is on."
The thin red wire that attaches to the back of the alt is responsible for a lot of the warning lights. Try unplugging it and grounding it to the block to see if the lights come on.

I think fuse 13 carries the power. Also plug into instrument cluster loose?

Yeah, that red wire on the alternator could be the problem. I just replaced the alternator a few weeks ago, and that could have disturbed my wiring harness (which really needs replaced). I'll give it a try and let you know what happens.

          Thanks,
          Dave

            Red lights:

During the lamp test function (key in pos II) only the battery light is dependent on that red alternator wire. All of them, however, are dependent on voltage from the blue/red from fuse 13. Check your turn signals in key position II-- if they work OK, fuse 13 is OK, and you'll need to trace the wire from there to the plug on the cluster.

            No start:

When you pulled a spark plug to check spark, was there a strong odor of fuel?

              Art,

I'll check the plugs again to see if they're getting wet. From what you're saying, this sounds like it could be two different problems. I forgot to mention that the bulb out light and the overdrive light both still come on like they normally did. I'll check fuse 13 and see what's going on there.

              Thanks,
              Dave

Go under the car and disconnect the positive wire from the fuel pump and probe it w/ a test light while someone cranks the car. The test light should stay lit if there is power. If the test light is lit your fuel pump is bad and needs to be replaced. good luck.....
