Ever buy from H&I in Hollywood? 700

They seem to have a good selection of Volvo's being a used Volvo dealer, but they are located in rundown section of North Hollywood and don't really have a lot, but an alley of sort next to the garage tehy do Volvo repairs. They did have 30 or so Volvos though and all looked good, but teh area and establishment kind of spooked me. However, I am not finding many 740/780/940 turbos in the autotrader. If you have horror stories about them, do you know of any good places to find Volvo's in Orange County or SoCal in general?

H&I is one of the older Volvo resale and repair shops in the LosAngeles area. Otto is a very good mechanic and a good person. They are not wildly appreciative of the 4 cylinder turbos, as they like to sell the rock solid n/a 4 or 5 cylinder cars. They are a good shop in a tired area. They plan to move north to the Valencia/Castaic area soon. Yes you pay more here, but if you like good support Otto and Robert will take care of you. The other store is in Glendale and is called T & M - recently renamed Affordable Volvos. Tommy has been working with Volvos for 15 years or more and they always have a good inventory. Good luck in your search. I have two 740's manual turbos and they are a great car- a sporty sedan that's fun to rev. I just can't find anything as fun as they are for as little money as they get. That wierd Oldsmobile boxy rectangular shape and squarish rear lid is a turnoff, but it conceals a really good car that is one of the last easy to work on rear wheel drive Volvos. What a bargain, really. I bought my last one for $500. I have a bead on a red '89 740 for $400, but it needs work. Engine and transmission and interiors can all be gotten relatively inexpensively. Happy hunting!

As far as H&I...let the buyer beware. They will not let you take a car to your own mechanic to have it checked out.

There is a lot on North Fairfax in West Hollywood (sorry, the name escapes me now, IIRC they are located between Melrose and Santa Monica) that has an excellent record for selling clean cars at fair-market prices.

As a previous poster recommended, check the recycler, they always have lots of Volvos listed.

And as for the shop next door to H&I (They used to be called Bill Boyd Automotive, don't know what they are now), I would never let them touch one of my cars again.
