780 Bertone Question 700

I like the body style of the 780 and see one for sale here in Southern California. It has 155K, but interior and exterior look really nice. The asking price is $4995. Seems high, but then again I don't see any others in the area for sale. Suggestions? They use the same engine as 740s right? So 155K might not be all that high considering teh quality of the 240/740/940 engine.

780 Bertone Question 700

I have to try to talk myself out of a 780. Researching the web has opened my eyes to the cost of finding interior/exterior parts. Even though the drivetrain is the same as 740 series and no mor eexpensive to repair everything else is. I really do like the model though. I have to be strong, I have to be practical. While paying tuition I have to get something cheap to maintain. I have to tell myself don't go for it, go for a 940 turbo.

ryan,

As long as you don't run into anything and take care of the interior your costs should not be extraordinary. I loved the 780 I had until I involuntarily refashioned some of the exterior panels. They are expensive-don't run into anything and make sure you have collision insurance and you will be fine.

780 Bertone Question 700

It depends on the year, If it is a 87 or 88 it will have the prv V6(LIKE MINE) not a bad engine for a Renault but god awfull for a Volvo. This engine has severe maintenance issues, the 4 cyl turbo on the other hand is a joy. The other option is to convert it to a real 780(7 series 8 cyl 0 cash after fill ups). A ford or chev V8 fits and with carefull selection of parts doesn't weigh much more than the V6 that is in there now, this is what my 780 will be in the near future.
On the other side they are a great long distance touring car, comfortable, great handeling(IPD sway bars help here, With the IPD bars the 780 is better than a 740 or 745, why I can only guess rigidity), safe and unique.

Enjoy

780 Bertone Question 700

Sorry, I knew I woudl forget something. It is a 1989 4 cyl turbo with 155K miles. I really liked teh 2 door sporty style, no that the traditional brick is bad, I just liked the uniqueness. I see you have a 1800, did they make any with an AT?

780 Bertone Question 700

Ryan

Yes they made 1800's with automatics, but it sucked the life out of the car(automatics wern't that great in the 60's, they relied on v8s with torque to overcome thier problems), plus it took the joy out of a good heel to toe downshift while hitting the perfect curve in the road. My 780 is my only automatic equipped car and this wiil change with the engine, I am of the belief that cars were meant to have 3 pedles(or 4 with a foot operated emergency brake). But of course these are just my old fashioned opinions, if you prefer a slush to a stick, all the more power to you.

Enjoy
