my 91 245 just died as I was turning into my driveway. There was no sounds from the engine when this happened it just sounded like it ran out of gas. There is plenty of gas. When trying to restart the starter has a slightly higher pitch and it just sounds different. I checked the timing belt from the top side of the cover and it looked ok so I tryed to turn the crank and it will go back and forth a little ways but then it kind of grinds a bit and will not move further. I am conserned it is major engine problems. any help would be much appreciated.

I vote for a broken timing belt. That is a classic sign, different starter pitch.

The belt can look OK, but they lose teeth especially on the crankshaft end. You might have to yank the upper cover and see if everything lines up correctly. At that point you might see more.

Pop off the distributor cap and crank and see if the rotor spins, if not then its the T Belt.

Check the timing belt by looking in side the oil filler hole and confirm the camshaft is turning. Other things to check are the fuel injection / pump relay and the crank position sensor.
