differences between M40 and M41 tranny (122 swap) 120-130

I picked up a good M41 tranny to convert my non-OD 122 wagon. I will be going thru it to confirm goodness but need to know what other bits I will need for the conversion.
Other than different front driveshaft, do I need anything else other than a OD switch?

Thanks all!

For wiring go to http://216.160.8.21/RWD/index.htm?id=695288.

BTW, if anyone could explain to me how to post links on this board, I would be very gratetful. I've read Jarrod's instructions, but don't understand them :-(

I have a M41 in my 122. I had a shop shorten the front of the driveshaft and balance it as a unit. I recall 11.5" being the correct figure, but you really need to take flange widths into account. You will also need to do a slight bit of wiring and decide how you want to switch it. No crossmember changes. Speedo gear is in the OD and may need to be replaced to account for different rear end ratios, but seems like a real PITA. I've used a speedo cable from a 160 without the angle drive without problems for several years now. The 160 cable is long enough to be routed through the proper holes.

I've never isntalled an OD box in a 122, but I do kow that the crossmember is different on a 140... you *might* have to modify yours. Somebody else can surely confirm this to be true or not.

Also be sure to check the flange size of your new gear box.. there are 2 sizes, but about 283 different combinations of spline count, overall size and shape, rear seal sizes... etc... etc. Hopefully you have the right size flange.

Matt
What was different on the crossmember? I'm getting close to initiating the M40 to M41 swap into my 144 and thought I had everything covered. I thought the crossmembers were the same.
Can a M40 crossmember be modified to fit the M41? Arg! Always something.

Also, any chance you can post a picture of the overdrive stalk switch that I inquired about a couple of weeks ago? I'd like to see where the factory cut the steering column cover before I butcher mine.

Thanks

Nothing about the crossmember needs to be changed on a 122. On the 140 series, they're different from OD and non-OD setups, but not on the 122.

There's a relief inside the cowl between the steering wheel and dash -- it'll be obvious what to cut once you see the inside.

Woops!
I wasn't paying attention. I thought I was in the 140 forum.
I'll post over there and be more careful next time.

BTW, the 140 cover does not have a "boss" in the switch location.

I did this in my 66 122 and didn't have a problem. If i remember right i had to cut out about 11 1/4 inches out of the front driveshaft. I welded it, and had to take care to keep it straight and plumb. then i took the whole driveshaft in and had it precision balanced. just don't get the orientation of the ujoints mixed up or it will vibrate. i used the later style 67 hanger. I think the gear for the speedo has to be the right one also if you want your speedo to work right. oh and the speedo cable was longer. i drove mine for a long time with the speedo cable routed through under the shifter boot, it will work that way.
