Service Light 700 1989

Whenever I start my car the orange "Ser-vice" light comes on. It goes out once the car reaches normal operating temperature. The car runs and drives fine. Any thoughts? Is there some sort of code I can check?

The 89 is the same as blackdogjenny's 90 in terms of the reset switch (I presently own an 89 744T and my previous car was a 1991 744T). There is a little rubber stopper in the bottom centre of the speedo, that once you pull out, you can use a pin, nail etc. to press the reset "clock" (and like jenny said, press it firmly). And, yeah, all it means is that the internal clock says it's time for an oil change. It is actually on a timer as opposed to shutting down when operating temp is reached. I think the time is 1.5 or 2 min.

Hope that helps.

On the 1990 740 the reset button on the instrument panel 1 inch from "0" on speedometer. I use a nail to reset it. Push it hard.

Isn't this in the FAQ? Or the owner's manual?

All it means is a clock has gone off, the 5000 mile reminder to bring it to your dealer for service. Some models can be reset by pushing a button, hidden by a plug in the lower right of the instrument cluster.
Yours probably needs to be reset by reaching behind the cluster to pull a reset lever. There's nothing wrong with the car, and it's not caused by any fault.

Best cure for it: remove the darn light bulb.
