I have a 1985 VOLVO 240 DL. Very happy with it... However the AC lost all it's R12. What is the least expensive way to upgrade to R134? What kits work?
Has anyone close to San Jose, California have this done? Can you advise a place? I also could try this myself. Anyone has detailed instructions on howto?

i've got an 86 245 & upgraded it 2.5 yrs ago. my kit ran about $240 with everything you need. no leaks or problems!

it took me about 2 weekends because of the first-time job, but very straightforward. Removing the comressor to drain the old oil and remounting it inline again is tough, though. you may want to take out the passenger seat (just 4 bolts and some maneuvering) so you can get to the evaporator & expansion valve.

for review of what you need to do, Dave Shannon, a volvo meister, has a zip file you can download for r134 conversion.

Well, I can't tell you how, but when i bought my '85 245, it was already converted to r134a. 2.5 years after I bought it , it still blows ice , even in the FL heat.

Those cheap kits from pep boys etc will function, but if you really want it to work properly, get the volvo factory retrofit kit, it includes everything but the high pressure adapter ( about$7 ) and includes a new upgrade evaporator.
I believe that fcp groton carries them.

There are several posts on this forum regarding this subject.. Just do a search on the conversion and you will find it.. It is mostly changing the oil and the seals, making sure it is flushed out and pumped down,, thats about all there is to it,, but check the posts please..
