744T test drive tomorrow.......what to look for 700 1990

tomorrow morning I am test driving a 1990 744T with 120k miles. The owner says he had the inner cooler cleaned, alternator replaced, sun roof drainage tubes cleaned, and the front rotors replaced in the 3 years he has had it. If I buy the car I will replace the timing belt, water pump, trans and brake fluids, hoses and drive belts tomorrow and Monday. What type of suspension problems naturally occur with 740's? I have a 240 and know what they offer. Is the suspension of the 740 like that of the 240?

the car looks pretty good with some paint fade (he didn't garage the car) and the engine looks very good with no appearance of oil leakage (doesn't appear he cleaned the engine to get it to look this way).

thanks

The suspension on a 700 is quite different than a 200; the only common problem is the front "cone" strut rod bushings, which will lead to brake shimmy when they get loose.
I use urethane bushings, myself.

If it still has the original plastic housed radiator replace it with all metal before it breaks. Don't ask how I know...

I'd look for problems with the air intake hoses under the hood, because they can be attacked by oil leakage.
Look in general for oil leaks around the front of the engine and try to see down the side by the turbo itself- notorious oil leak spot.
Coolant leaks are likely at the top of the water pump, same as any 240.

Look for clean coolant, oil, and transmission fluid.

Turn the wheels hard left or right and look at the suspension bushings: you can see the sway bar links (usually all cracked) and the cone bushings- neither is expensive but both likely need replacement. At the rear, the only thing likely to wear out are the shock absorbers, so other than looking for obvious oil leakage from them, not much to see.

Look for idle-speed vibration when in gear- can mean bad engine mounts. And plan on a new heater control valve- every 740 needs one.

Look for a failing headliner- lousy job to replace that stuff. A bad power sunroof motor is no fun either- expensive whether new or used.

Look for rust starting at the floor just behind the front wheels, and under the battery (look from below). Finally, look for blue or black smoke out the back during hard acceleration. Black = intake air leaks. Blue = turbo on its way out.

Pull off the turbo intake hose and check the turbo shaft for movement, also look at the impellers for damage. I little bit of play is okay just as long as the impellers look good. While it's off, check the intake hose for rigidity/firmness. This hose often gets oil soaked and mushy where the hose meets the turbo. Also check the other turbo hoses in the system...they are quite expensive so if they are bad you can use this in negotiations.

I think the suspension in the 740 is similiar, the rear end is a live axle (ie: NOT Multilink w/Nivomats).

Good luck with the car,
Bean
