The normal 5-speed trans available for that year, would be the best bet and easiest. This is the M47 transmission.
You'll need the driveshaft, clutch and brake pedal, rear transmission mount, clutch cable, flywheel, clutch/pressure plate/t.o. bearing, and a pilot bearing and clip.
If you find a good junk 87-93 240, it'll have all the parts you need. I know Autowerkes in my home town has several right now. They are online at www.theautowerkes.com or (860) 443-1066.
I think the US market did not receive any 5-speed GL models, or perhaps only by special order. The rest of the world did, so there's no issue with installing the parts. Good thing with the 88 model, is you can use either the early (no-holes) or late (89+ crank sensor) flywheels. Likewise the transmission does not need the sensor hole at the top, but you can use one with the hole.
You can also eliminate the transmission cooler lines, and the entire shifter box from your floor. Note that the reverse lights need to be wired to the new trans, and the neutral safety switch needs to be bypassed, so it no longer interlocks the starter circuit. Also, if you have cruise control, you're supposed to have an additional switch mounted on the clutch pedal.
Good luck with it, the 5-speed is definitely more fun. Mine, stock, is very nearly as quick as my friend's 89 240GL Turbo conversion with the AW71 auto. :)
