Greetings,
My Neighbors 88 240 with Aisin Warner Automatic has no overdrive. The rear main seal was replaced by a shop and they didn't tighten the transmission lines at the trans. His wife leaked out 5 quarts of trans fluid. We put 5 quarts back in and the overdrive doesn't work, but 1,2,3 work fine. Yes the relay is good, getting the proper signal at the solenoid when the switch is pushed.

Does anyone know if the overdrive burns out first before the 1,2,3 gears?

Unfortunately, that is the usual method of failure.
You might get the OD to work again by simply cleaning out the solenoid- applying 12V to it while blowing some air or brake cleaner through it.
Replacing the solenoid is the next step- but a new one could cost as much as a used junkyard transmission, so you'll have to be the judge in that case.
