1978 244DL Sunroof Stuck Open 200 1978

Hi- I'm a new member of this forum. I just bought my daughter a very clean 1978 244DL with about 87Kmi.

The sunroof has gotten itself into a situation where it will only close halfway: it refuses to go further. Is this a known issue with a known repair?

Many thanks, in advance.

    Hey there,
I have an 83 and I was looking at my sunroof crank the other day. If the problem is with the crank gear, then this might help you.

Take off the one screw holdign the handle on, then the 2 screws holding the 'drive' gear. Now you can slip the handle back on and trying turning the gear. It should stop at a certain point when you're turning it. After realizing this, I adjusted it so that it would stop turning as soon as the sunroff was completely closed. Now put the gear back in with the 2 screws and then adjust the handle so that it can be tucked up when the sunroof is closed. Hope this helps!

Why would my sunroof not fit perfectly when completely closed. It looks as if the roof is bowed up a little bit or something???

    Smith

There are a few posts on my problem scattered through this forum. They're hard to figure out. After reading them and fiddling, it seems that there's a cable of sorts which engages the helical gear that pops out of the handle area, and that there's stop in the cable. My daughter's system had loosened up and gotten on the wrong side of the stop, so it would only close halfway. Removing the gear assembly and pushing the sunroof fully back, then reinstalling fixed this for the most part, BUT:

NOW I can't get the back of the sunroof to come fully up when the sunroof is closed. It is very close to fully closed, but not enough.

      Again, can anyone help?

I'm not sure what your specific problem is. The best thing to do is to check all the parts. It's a pretty simple rig. Start by pulling back the vinyl headliner to expose the glides and height adjusments. To get the headliner back open the sunroof about halfway and then gently pry on the front edge of the vinyl liner. There are about 5 snaps that should pop as you pry down on the liner. Then the liner should slide back. With the liner out of the way you can check for broken guides and adjust them.
To adjust I take the crank off and slide the roof with my hand. It should slide easily with the crank off. Push the roof all the way forward. If the rear end of the roof does not come up all the way, loosen the rear guides, push the rear of the roof up and retighten the guides.(the adjustment nuts are fairly obvious if you are looking at the guides). You may have to mess around a bit to get it just right.

If the roof opens and closes normally without the crank, try reinstalling the crank. Make sure it is cranked all the way open or closed (match with the roof postition) because many people have said the crank has a stop, but I have never noticed a stop on mine. If it still does not work I would wonder about the condtion of the cables or the crank gear.
