Windshield washer tank would not fill: reason-- 900 1991

On our recent trip I noted the low light warning for windshield washer would come on. Tried to fill it and it appeared to be full. Took off the filler tube and found a very fine filter through which the fluid passes from the tube. Took it out and back flushed, now it fills. This filter is a very fine mesh but will back flush.

Yeah, it looks like a good design. I think I have disassembled all of mine, cleaned it up, and checked the hoses, valve, electrical connection and screen(s) at one time. Detergents and what ever else finds it’s way in there will gum thing up after a few years (or a decade). Warning: there are more hoses and connections than what you would think. Make a diagram if you are going to completely dissemble the whole thing.

I didn’t realize this until a coupla weeks ago. Been buying WW fluid at wally world and they have a “summer formula” washer fluid. Before it gets too cold, check what you have been putting in there.

Another failure mode is the lower cap: yes, there is a second screw-on cap on the tank, way down below the air intake box (at least on turbos). My lower cap split, allowing fluid to leak out down to the level of the tank top. A new cap, along with Houdini-like contortions to install it, solved the problem.
