New owner so what may be an obvious answer is a mystery to me:

Is there a way to open just the top of the tailgate from the outside without unlatching the bottom. It seems like an obvious thing but maybe I'm missing something. There is only a window latch on the inside.

Maybe the DPO (Dreaded Previous Owner) modified it in some way?


Also is there a kit to replace the funky prop rods with modern hydraulics? One-handed open/close.

    There should be a round button in the center bottom of the inside top part
    of the gate that will open the top from the inside without opening the bottom.

    Mine had a hydraulic on one side when I got it in 84. Still works fine....

    No modifications were made by previous owner, that's the way it is, open bottom, open top, close bottom. Suppose you could smash the rear window to get in without opening bottom section, but could get kinda messy....

    Congrats on wagon purchase, my favorite Amazon style of all!!
