seeking opinions 700

I have a 92 240 I am selling to a friend. I am also looking at both a 1990 740T and a 760T. What opinions are there about the 740 and 760T? What are the more common problems with these vehicles? I self service my 240 and the car runs well yet I am wanting more power from the turbo (besides I am trying to help a friend out by selling him my 240, he is in a bind).

thanks

    If all other things were equal, I'd choose the 740 over the 760.

    IMHO, the auto climate control and the Nivomats on the 760 are simply gadgets. They have a reputation for breaking, and are expensive to replace/repair.

    When you're talking about a 15 year old car, simpler is better.

    Just my 2 cents... arguably worth that.

    Both 740/760T models are good. The 760 was the predecesor to the 940 series.

    Differences that I know of in the 760:
    * Integrated fog lights up front
    * More electrical systems (ie: automatic climate control, dual power seats)
    * I think the 760 has more sound proofing
    * Different alloys. 740 probably has Draco, 760 w/nice non-sporty look.
    * I believe the '90 760 still has the Nivomats, they are typically good for 150k or so but when they need to be replaced they are big bucks (OEM from an aftermarket supplier ~$200 per side).

    I have both an '89 765T and a '94 945T. The 765 feels alot quieter while cruising at highway speeds. Part of this has to do with the comparative mileage on engines (68k 765 vs. 142k 945), I think the 945 needs a valve adjustment w/new valve hushers. The other part of it may be extra sound proofing (that may or may not be there).

    Both are nice, I would compare the mileage/cleanliness/service records/turbo shaft play/etc... between the two cars and make a judgement call. Check under the oil filler caps for grime/sludge.

    Good luck,

      What year on these cars? Early 760s had climate control issues and a live rear axle. 89+ (I think) has IRS, = much better ride. Later engines are also better, true for 740 also. 760 is quieter. Nivomats can be swapped out for normal springs and shocks, get the kit from IPD.

      AVOID the V-6 760 (supreme POS) at all costs!
