122 Wagon ride height question 120-130 1967

I am the proud new owner of a 67 122 wagon. Got it last week and as I slowly go over it I'm sure I'll have numerous questions.

The first:

It seems as if body is not sitting properly. I can't really tell if the front end is too high or the rear end is too low. I have nothing to reference it to so am unsure which end to look at/fix. Is there a body height measurement? It has had bushings/shocks recently replaced so the only thing I can think of is worn springs on the rear? If I fix the rear springs it seems as if it will sit to high all around.

Help!

Thanks,

mlennan

    122 Wagon ride height question 120-130 1967

    Hello mlennan:

Okay, I just checked the ride heights. On the left side both front and rear the ride height is 23", on the right side the ride height is 23-1/4" both front and rear. Just as a reminder, I measured from the bottom of the rim to the high point of the fender's wheel opening arc.

My car is parked on a bridge with a decent camber so that might explain the variance between right and left.

    Cheers,

    Jeff Pucillo

    122 Wagon ride height question 120-130 1967

    Hello Mlennan:

Wow, I thought that I was the new owner of the prettiest '67 122 Wagon in America. I have had mine about 2 months and it looks great, really great, but not quite as great as yours. Congratulations.

My brick was previously owned by a rather fastidious Volvo tech so I suspect that my ride height is pretty dead nuts. I will measure it tomorrow as recommended in subsequent posts and write to you on Monday. Can you wait that long?

    Cheers,

    Jeff Pucillo

    122 Wagon ride height question 120-130 1967

they sit high all round, personally I prefer to install rubber donuts at the top of the springs for the extra clearance. makes the ride smoother. Anyway, paint job looks good, enjoy.

      donuts ? 120-130 1967

Rubber donuts sound like a good idea, , where can you get them? do you put them up front as well?

      thanks

        donuts ? 120-130 1967

Any decent autoparts store sells them. They are universal fit, they come in various sizes. If you are lucky you find the same diamtere, otherwise you get slightly larger and cut out a section, so that when the ends are squeezed together it is the correct diameter. On the 120 you need to remove one end of the shock and the restraint strap, then you lower the axle assembly enough to slip them in. I use some duct tape to hold a modified ring together untill the pressure of the spring holds them in place.

    122 Wagon ride height question 120-130 1967

VERY nice looking car! You'll enjoy it... treat her well, and she'll do you right back.

Can't tell if its sitting level in the picture, but it looks like the rear springs probably are worn. Replacements should be cheap, and easy to install.

IPD sells overload springs which willl certainly do the job of getting the rear back up, but beware, they make for a harsh ride. Only go with that option if you tote heavy stuff. Which I do in mine, and I'm please with those springs....

IPD may have stock stiffness springs as well.. not sure. If not them, somebody does.

Or maybe the previous owner forgot about the bars of gold he/she stashed in the spare tire compartment....?

122 Wagon ride height question - How to measure 120-130 1967

A similar question was asked at Volvospeed, and Bay 13 told the person to measure from the bottom of your rim to the edge of the fender.

If it is of any use, all our bricks appear to have the same space between the front and rear wheels and their respective fenders - including the two 740s that had over 230,000 miles on them.

Perhaps you can put in another post that asks other 122 owners to take that measurement. You can get several sets of measurements and come to a conclusion.

BTW - you can use a long subject line so that brick owners can understand what you need as they scan the list of subjects.

    First, congratulations!

You are now owner of Volvo's absolute most lovely designed car.. Well, in my opinion! :-)

Check out the picture, scanned from a 1965 brochure.. It coul give you an idea of the "original" clearence.

The original rear-springs had an tendency to worn out quickly. If the bushings and so are replaced in the front, check out if the bolts where tightened while jacked up! -typical "wrong-doing" -since the bushings most be tightened while the bearing-arms i.e. are in "normal" possition..

Anyway, the original wheel-clearence WAS very high, not like today where everything has to "fly low"... :-)

    Hope you understand my english..

    /Soren
