Piston slap or exhaust noise 700

So, I have always thought that the noise I got from the engine when accelerating was piston slap. About 10 seconds ago, I was looking around the 700 FAQ's and found a little thing on leaking exhaust gaskets and noticed that it was described as a tick tick tick under acceleration. Mine has this very symptom.

And, on the freeway (I have to have the windows down to deal with So Cal heat) I can hear a light ticking while cruising.

Does this sound like piston slap or an exhaust gasket leak?

Thanks,
Eamon

Piston slap goes away when hot, try high octane next fill up.

Not always, I've heard B230s slap when they were warm (including the ones I own). But yes, generally it goes away, or at least for the most part.

When the car is cold you can start it and quickly determine which gasket leaks feeling in the area of each runner with your hands. That is if it leaks when cold and you must be quick before it warms and it warms up fast.

Out '90 744 TI has classic piston slap. It had it when we bought Evander, and 80,000 miles later, at 233,000 it sounds the same to me.

It is loudest at idle when the car is cold, and it quiets when the car is warmed up fully. I never hear it on the highway.

When warm, Evander is great fun on a twisty road, and at about 40 MPH, cruising along he is a quiet car.

I suspect that you have an exhaust leak, or some mechanical problem.

    Hi Eamon,

Sounds like leaking exhaust manifold gaskets to me. Piston slap usually disappears when the engine is over 1200 or 1500 RPM. The exhaust gaskets are a common problem too, especially on B230FTs. That's probably your problem. Be careful with those exhaust manifold studs! They can break off in the head if you're not careful. It's a good idea to replace the ones you're able to remove.
