Below 1000 rpm my sond, brake failure, parking brake and battery light come on.

Alternator?

Ground?

I do realize that there is a real possiblity that this could be related to my semi deteriorated wiring harness and my cheapo repairs.

i replaced my daughter's alternator twice, re-wiring the batt idiot light in the process. other wierdnesses reared their head in the idiot light arena. today, after the alternator failed to charge (for the 3rd time), i started peeling the tape back and looking at the wires coming out of the connector on the firewall... i am now fully aware of why it is referred to as the "biodegradable wiring harness"! i'm surprised the car ran at all. ALL the wires were nearly completely bare. now i'm trying to figure out wher those four (i think) wires go to, so i can replace them.
i'm new to this volvo thing, but that'd be a good place to start.
is it comforting to know you're not alone?

I've been doing the 240 thing for almost 6 years. Discovered the board real quick.

Nothing that has happened to my cars has'nt happened to most.

alternator-yes.

ground-yes.

bad harness-yes.

other possibility is the voltage regulator and/or the large red wire running from the alt to the start, under the engine with the rotting harness. it rots also. good luck, chuck(not b).

That's a classic alternator symptom. When was the last time you looked at your brushes? It could be that you just need to replace the brushes, maybe the entire regulator. The alternators are pretty tough and don't go bad too often. And yeah, check the wiring. But before you do anything pull the regulator out to inspect the brushes.
