New Intake Manifold Gasket -- What Else Should I Do While It's Off 200 1983

Got a new oil breather box and coolant temp sensor for the injection system and will change those out. Just replaced flametrap with the relocation kit and put on new injector seals so need to do that. Anything else I can do while I have the manifold off?

The outer injector O-rings are very thin and can roll up out of their grove when installing the assembly into the head. Several good suggestions have been made here in the past for finding vacuum leaks. Spray around with carb cleaner or an unlit propane torch and listen for engine rpm change.

You might want to check the heater hoses while your in there. They are a PITA to change with the intake on.

Have you replaced/repaired the wiring harness?

The ECT sender (talks to the ECU, not the gauge) is accessable easiest with the oil box and throttle body off, could be easy with the intake manifold off. Have a look.

BTW - the oil box and other PCV hoses were redesigned beginning with the 1988 models. Puts the flame trap above the intake manifold between rail #3 and #4. Using it required wiring harness to get below the-manifold rear of rail #4.

Others who have not purchased the relocation kit can go this route. The taller oil box bolts right on.

That's all I can think of right now.

Regards,

Bob

Your post suggest we may be working on similar items. I had the intake manifold off on my 82 b23E with the K-jet CIS and the individual injectors (not on a fuel rail)and cleaned up the entire intake system. I also soaked the injectors in a cleaning solvent to get the buildup off the shaft. Upon reassembly and after insuring that there are no vacuum leaks I am now having some missing problems and it looks like number four injector is not working properly. Disconnecting this cylinder's plug (good spark on new plug) made little or now diference to RPM. I did not replace the injector seals, in fact I was unable to get the injectors to release from the holders that bolt to the head. So a question if you don't mind. How were you abe to separate the injectors from the holders to get at the seals?
thanks

My car only has 61,000 miles and the old seals had not deteriorated that much so I simply removed the holders and pulled them out with my hand. No problem at all.

given what you posted, i would replace the injectors, holders and orings. the injectors wear out, the seats get beaten to death. 100k is about the limit. if i'm using the old injectors, i break the holder like a walnut to get them off the injectors. pulling them out can be hard because the injector seal gets hard and has no give for the injector to squeeze. i have seen people put the assembly upside down in a vise and pound the injectors out, but i'm leery of the injector tip after that.

you might also get a new oil seperator and install that, too. unless the car has had exemplary service over it's life, the box is slighty clogged and cleaning it with any success is difficult. with the intake off, it's much easier. good luck, chuck.
