Tachometer Installation: Mechanical vs. Electrical 120-130

Well.....

I just picked up a very cool old NOS Smiths (Made in Englad)
tach. What's particularly neat about this tach is that the
needle moves from right-to-left.

It is, however, a mechanical tachometer. Are they any sugestions
about making a mechanical tach work in a 122 versus an electrical
tach?

Best,

How big is it? Not many backwards tacks out there... the only one I know of would be like the one in my '53 Jag...

Its cable driven, and runs via cable off the exhaust cam on the DOHC engine. I expect you'd be real hard pressed to get it to work on a Volvo... you'd have to drive it off something that spins 1/2 engine speed (cam speed or distributor), and anti-clockwise.

Some of the later ('60s) Jags have a tach generator... such that the tach itself is actually a voltmeter or amp meter, but that doesn't sound like what you've got...

Got any pictures? I reckon you should just give it to someone that can use it like myself :-)

Yeah, I thought the little speedo-stype driven tach in my Dad's Xk120 ('51 FHC) was pretty neat. That and the oil-level read-out built into the gas gauge, and the tranny dipstick. I've got to get that from him sooner or later and rebuild it.

Yes... You do need to get that car. But don't count on that oil/fuel level gauge thing to be working. I have yet to see one that does. Them tachs are a no-brainer though. THey all seem to work perfectly. So does the dipstick for the 4 speed manual, but you get gear oil on the carpet if you ain't careful.
