Reluctant Start on 87 245 200

A minor annoyance, but a frustrating annoyance nonetheless. Car is a 1987 245 with B230F, auto trans. Problem occurs only when the car is dead cold in the morning, or after sitting for a long period to completely cool down. Car will start fine, but stall when put into gear. When restarted, starts up fine, and then if put immediately into gear (within 2-4 seconds) will not stall and runs great. If it is left to idle after initial start-up, ti will stumble and stall after about 10-15 seconds. All ignition components (plugs, rotor, cap, wires) are new; throttle body is clean; new O2 sensor. Seems like it might be an ECU or AMM related glitch, but can;t locate anything obvious nd need help diagnosing nad trouble shooting. Thaks.

Reluctant Start (Cold Running) on 87 245 200 1987

This may sound a bit off the wall, but I got it from an independent Volvo guy with years of experience here and in Norway. He says this symptom (which blooms in the Fall each year) can be due to accumulated deposits on the intake valves and in the general valve area.

The theory is that these deposits soak up a portion of what the ECU intended as extra fuel for cold-running. After a few minutes, as the deposits become saturated and the engine warms a bit, the mixture then becomes adequate for the conditions. A couple of Techron treatments can't hurt.

It would seem that an undetected air leak could also cause the problem, or maybe the Base Idle setting, as mentioned.

Or could the AMM potentiometer be biased toward the lean side? (Art B.?)

Have you set the Basic Idle Mixture and RPM? If so, and the problem persists, you may need to clean the IAC, or a new IAC.

Thanks for the suggestion. When I cleaned the throttle body I also cleaned the IAC, but in dumb momnet forgot to check it and tis wiring for function. So, I know it's clean, whether it is working properly or not is the question. Will check it out.

When I cleaned the throttle body of my car (the exact year, model and trans type as yours) mine would start fine and idle for about an minute and then die. Would start up just fine again and die. Checked all the wires replaced a bunch of stuff and still the same problems.

After about a month or so the problem went away and has been gone for about a year. Figured I may have managed to get something full of cleaner and it just took time to clear itself (dry) out.
