Stupid Overdrive 200 1990

My overdrive (automatic tranny) will not engage at all. I have replaced the solenoid, re-wired the connector and replaced the fluid. The relay clicks when I press the OD switch also, so I'm pretty sure its OK. Is there anything I could be missing? When I replaced the solenoid and re-wired the connector(was bare wiring)the OD kicked in twice, but will not engage at any speed now. Thanks in advance for any advice.

In order for the transmission to go into last gear, the solenoid has to be ENERGIZED. When you push the little OD pushbutton, this DE-energizes the solenoid and keeps the car in low gear: high rpms. Your description sounds like the solenoid isn't energizing. I'd pull the OD RELAY and slide the white cover off. Look to see if there is any cracking on the circuit board and re-solder anything that doesn't look good. Second...I'd make DOUBLE sure that the wire from the pushbutton is intact. There's a plastic connector under the car where the wire travels to the actual solenoid. Sometimes that wire is bare or contacting a metal surface. This will DE-energize the solenoid and keep the car in low gear. Sort of a backwards design..solenoid has to remain energized at all times in order for the last gear to engage.

Of course..if you're ready to be done with the whole OD thing..then there's a permanent OD solenoid fix that will disable the pushbutton switch ..so that'll never work again..HOWEVER, you'll have all gears and never have to deal with the OD solenoid or relay again.

If you're interested email me.

Are you sure it's not engaged all the time now for some reason?

It is definitely not engaging, no tach but rpms are way high on the highway, and I got it to engage twice before, so I know when its on or off

I had a overdrive problem that did not go away until I replaced the transmission.
It would go into OD on a decell at higher speeds but once you tipped in on the throttle it went right back to third gear. (over 45mph)

Try pushing the button (OD off)when on a decell.....wait a few seconds before you push the button and see if you feel it downshift from fourth to third.
You can see it on the tach if you have one.

I replaced the trans with one that had low miles and I used the same solenoid and didn't do anything to the wiring. (I had repaired the wiring previously and also replaced and bench tested another solenoid before I decided to replace the trans.)
I also replaced the throttle kickdown cable and tried several settings.
NADA!

Note: The OD seemed to go out slowly and when I pulled the old solenoid off of the trans I had found that it was modified to keep the OD always on so I knew there was a problem in the trans.
