195/65/15 on 89 740GL? 700

Ok
I went down to Costco for the big tire sale (rebates).
Ok this is my car:
- 89 740 GL using the 15' wheels from a 700 Turbo (star aluminum mag). So the last 6 yrs I've been running my GL with 195/60/15.

I believe the stock size for my car was something like 185/70/14. However, when i bought the car, it came with 185/65/15 on the steel wheels before I changed to these aluminum mags.

I finally decided to go with Michelin X Radials 195/60/15.
Maybe there was some miscommunication with the Costco Clerk, cuz when I picked up my car I saw they installed 195/65/15. The price is the same as the 195/60/15.

I drove it home anyway to test these out and they seem fine. And I don't feel the bumps and potholes on the cement as much as I did when i had the 60 profiles.

so is it safe to just keep these 65's or go back to change them to 60's? I do mostly city driving below 100KM/hr. Even when I'm on the highway I max at 110km/hr..yah I'm a slow driver :)

Ok, after driving on these 195/65/15 for a couple of days they just did not feel right. It felt a tad sluggish...

So I brought it back and asked for the ones that they were supposed to install in the first place (195/60/15). I even asked the supervisor to waive the installation fee this time because of the extra time I had to spend due to their error.

So now I've got on the 60's and they feel 'normal' again

I'm glad they were able to waive the install fee ($11 cdn)/tire.

Hope these tires will run great and last a while. My old tires were Bridgestone RE92's and they were slippery in the rain!

I had 195/65/15 for at least 5 years. I've changed to stock 195/60/15 few months back and generally the 65 provide slightly better comfort over holes etc as you had observed. There's a bit more body roll when taking corners with the 65 but other than that no problems at all.

You will have a speedoemter error, though small. Here's a site to find out how much it will b off. Compare with the stock tire size from the door edge label or owner's manual.

If you end up with the error reading low, you are going faster than your speedo indicates, but the radar trap cop won't know that!!

    Good Luck,

    Hi Frank,

Yeah, the 195/65R15s will work just fine. That's what my 745 NA has on it (both summer and winter tires). It had them when I bought it. I'll probably put 195/60R15s on when I replace them just because it's the correct size, but the 65s will work just fine. From what I've seen though, 195/65R15s are usually less expensive then 195/60R15s. Not much, but a little usually, you might want to check it out. Costco might owe YOU money :)
