Overdrive acting strangely 200 1981

My overdrive is acting strangely, shifting fine when cold, but intermittantly reluctant after warmed up. I already read about resoldering the relay, but I'm not sure that's the problem. Here's why:

When I engage the overdrive the light comes on on the dash, but it doesn't upshift and the engine stays at the same RPM (no tach, just can't feel it slow.) Also, when I let off of the gas, it seems to free-wheel a little. If I'm off the gas when I disengage the OD, it then hooks up and speeds up the engine a little. Even though it seems to free-wheel, if I get back on the gas the engine speeds back up to 4th gear RPM, and when I disengage it when on the gas it doesn't change.

Could this be a fluid problem, or just a solenoid problem?

What you are describing is a lack of positive engagement of the unit once it warms up a little. You may also find that it engages OK at higher speeds, but not, say, below 50 or 60MPH. First check the fluid level. Low fluid can give these symptoms. If fluid level is OK, it's probably leaking seals in thehydraulics. What I did was drain and refill with Redline MTL...expensive at $9/qt, but the OD has behaved much better for 6 years and 60k mi now.

Otherwise it may be time for an overdrive seal kit to repair the leaky piston seals you undoubtedly have. Duane ("OD Guru") hasn't been seen on this BB for a while - he used to sell these parts at a good price and offer detailed expertise on installation.

Don't have a solution, but my OD also works well for the first 3 times using it (does that nice *bump* and smoothout) but then gives me a big vibration before dropping down, or else it doesn't catch at all, so I turn it off.

I changed the (manual) transmission fluid to Amsoil last month but I did not service the OD unit itself.

Are you disengaging the clutch when you're engaging the overdrive? The owner's manual recommends so.

        >>Are you disengaging the clutch when you're engaging the overdrive? The owner's manual recommends so.<<

Mine doesn't recommend that. It says no other action is needed than pushing the button and holding the throttle steady.

The only thing it says about the clutch is that when shifting OUT of overdrive, using the clutch can make the transition smoother.

I'll be checking the fluid level first, then if it happens again I'll bang under the dash to see if the relay might be the problem, then the last resort will be a seal kit I guess.

        Thanks for your input!
