Wipers 444-544

I replaced the dash so everything was disconnected and labled. While the dash was off, I removed the wiper motor and linkage and found why the wiper travel was pretty excessive on the driver side. With some adjustment to the linkage, it all went back together just fine. I pulled the motor cover to see if there was gunk or anything else nasty around the motor and all looked good.
Now that it is all back together, everything works except the wipers. I was pretty careful to lable the wires that were pulled from the motor, not the switch.

Is there anything I could try to track down the problem? The Oregon rainy season is almost here and I would sure hate to keep it in the garage til spring.

Dennis:

Congrats on fixing the excessive travel on your wipers. Mine still jamb after 60 to 90 minutes due to a nut coming loose on the motor shaft. I car barely reach the nut with much contortion and am afraid to blindly apply locktite to a moving assembly.

Did you try cleaning all of the wire, motor and switch terminals? Reliability improved tremendously after cleaning them on my car.

Joe,
I removed the wires from the motor only and the terminals and clips looked pretty good so I didn't clean them. Given that the motor worked fine before, something has changed that I haven't found yet. I will try the tips from Matt B., clean the terminals anyway and keep my fingers crossed. While removing the old dash and installing the replacement, a lot of wires got yanked and pulled so maybe something got disconnected elsewhere. After spending hours under the dash, I don't look forward to getting under there again. With the seats out, those seat tracks and cross member, no matter how much padding is on them tend to do a job on the back.

I'd start by making sure you have power at the appropriate terminals at the switch when it should be on... that is, make sure the motor is getting electricity when it should...

You could, of course, try bypassing the switch though and see if you can get it to go...

Could also perhaps be a ground problem... I know a 122 motor is isolated to keep vibration down, and there is a separate ground strap for the motor... Try turning it on, and grounding the motor housing manually.

just a couple thoughts... Past that, I'm not familiar with 544 wiper assemblies, so if the problem lies there, I really can't help.
