The tailgate (?) of my station wagon no longer stays open by itself. I think those are hydraulic pumps? Is this an expensive repair? Thanks. -- mm

You can buy new rear door strut supports at most "chain" auto parts stores. Just find the display in the store, there will be a book for the strut application. Find Volvo 240 buy 2 on for each side and while you there a Haynes Manual for the Volvo 240. The manual will give you very clear instructions regaridng swapping out the old with the new.

This is a really easy project and the cost will be approx $50.00 with the manual.

I put up with that for a long time. The rear struts are fairly cheap and well worth keeping the door from clanging you in the head. Easy install as well.
