Speedometer Sender Unit on 1992 940 GL 900

I found the unit and pushed out the electrical plug. It looks OK to me. How do I get the unit off the diferental? I took out the 5mm hex screw but the black plastic piece did not come off. Should I force it with tools? The cruise control and speedometer do not work, so I wanted to check if the sending unit was the problem.

the black piece is the sender. it pushes through the cover with an oring to seal it. i'd be inclined to test it with a digital meter and look for ac voltage with the wheels turning, at idle, in gear and off the ground. good luck, chuck.
