Hi. I need advice about choosing transmission fluid. I have to admit that the transmission is the part of the car I know least about.
My understanding is that the BW-35, which I have in my '75 164, is quite a different transmission than the later AW70's that I am most familiar with. For one thing (I have been led to believe), this BW-35 has adjustable clutches that can benefit from periodic adjustment (accessible from the outside)... is this correct?
And, are these BW-35 clutches (aside from their being adjustable) different in other ways from the clutches I've always assumed to be in automatic transmissions of all types, including the AW70?
Anyway, my main inquiry is this: I have always (for decades) used synthetic fluids (engine oil, transmission fluid), and routinely used AmsOil ATF for the latter. However, I recently (a year ago) acquired this 164, have been working on it, and now am ready to give the transmission a fluid change. AmsOil meanwhile has introduced a new ATF (in addition to their regular one that I've always used in my AW's). This new fluid is advertised as:
"Super Shift Racing Transmission Fluid. Provides quick, solid upshifts. Automatic transmissions do not slip.... Delivers unmatched friction reduction and reduced wear to clutch plates...."
So, given that the BW-35 is different, do you think it would benefit from this transmission fluid, or should I use the regular ATF that I've always used.
Thanks.

Hi, guys.
Thanks for all your responses. They've been very helpful.
It looks, in light of the remarks about slippage, that my transmission might benefit from the new "non-slip" ATF.
And, to help it survive, I've already planned for a transmission cooler (I put Volvo transmission coolers in all my cars -- they're a little overpriced, but they come with screw fittings/couplers that are perfect, and these give me more confidence than simple hoses and clamps).
So thanks again, folks.

I've e-mailed the pages out of my service manual. It is 7 pages and about 700kB in total, 1 e-mail per page. Let me know if it does not come out clear. And from that there is definately 2 break bands.
Not sure if the new fluid will make much difference, perhaps make the shifting even harder! Probably better on modern transmissions, but keep in mind your 30 year old transmission (with much older original design) works different from the ones of today. I would stick to the original stuff. My comment was that >modern< transmissions are designed to have slip on gear change, and that is where most of the damage occurs.
Have fun...

Yes, on second thought, I think I will stick to the regular ATF -- it's still synthetic and more than just "good enough" even if it isn't a special "no slip" formulation.
Thanks again very much.

Niel, would it be possible to send me a copy of those aswell? If so, please send them to benjamin.flierman[at]wur.nl.
Thanks heaps! Cheers, ben

Will do, but I might actually rather upload it to a public file hosting service and just post the link to it. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good free service with no pop-up screens? At the moment I'm looking at http://www.4free-network.com and I want to also use it to send photos to my parents.

Here follows the links to the pages hosted at Upload4Free. This is my first try and I hope it works. The files are hosted until they are not viewed for 30 days. Let me know if it does not work.

the fluid is type f. the bw35 in a 164 has it's problems due to the higher hp of the b30. with a b18 or b20, they did fine. all the bw35s i replaced in the past were all 164s. can't say how synthetic would help or hurt, sorry. good luck, chuck.

I've got the tune up details. It's 2 adjustable brake bands, no valve body. The one is adjustable from inside the car through a rubber plug in the transmission tunnel, the other you need to remove the oil pan... The BW35 is not supposed to have any slip, which is why it shifts so hard. Later transmissions all have slip designed into them. Slip, which is designed into all moder smooth shifting transmissions, is where damage occurs. Since the BW35 is not supposed to slip, it lasts for ever (as long as you do not drive very hard which is a different issue). Another advantage of the BW35 over other transmissions is that you can push-start the car just like a manual. E-mail me if you want the tuning pages scanned. Virtually everyone else on this forum will probably tell you to convert to a manual.
Have fun...

As far as I have even been able to tell, there is only one band in a BW35, and it is adjustable. Learned that from rebuilding a couple. Can be done from below. No matter what you do the forward clutch apply piston and its diaphragm spring will eventually shatter. That will take out third gear pretty quick and the valve body.
Real bad trans the BW55 was an improvement (no bands at all) and the AW70 was a four speed Bw55 built by the Japanese, and for once Volvo had a good trans.
PUt any ATF in it you want. Won't change anything for good or bad.
