Interior Light Delay Unit? 700

Did any of 700 Series come with a delay unit for the interior light i.e. a device which keeps the interior light on for thirty seconds or so after the door is closed?

If not, how easy is it to fit such a device to the model and is there such thing as an aftermarket interior light delay unit which is ready to fit? I built up a delay unit from a proprietary kit a few years ago for one of my other cars and it took ages to do (It basically came as a curcuit board and a jumble of bits) and the end result was deemed too suspect to fit to any vehicle. It is still extant somewhere, but will go nowhere near The Volvo!

Footnote: I recall that some models of the 200 Series had such a device in the form of a relay.

The delay circuit is built into the light itself, but takes an input a wire that comes from the drivers door switch. Obviously you need both to get the feature working.

For those that don't like the feature, it can be easily disabled. Just pull the light down from the headliner. There are 4 wires - ground, +12, common door switch, and driver door switch (for delay). If you remove the wire for the drivers door, the delay will be disabled but the light will still come on and off for the drivers door, just like the other doors. This wire is the one that comes out of the small circuit board at the front of the light assembly.

I think all the 900 series cars came with this "feature". I've had it on both of my '93 945s and I absolutely hate it! Upon exiting the car at night, I'm continually looking over my shoulder wondering if the door is shut all the way -- and if the damn light is going to turn off. Unfortunately for you, it's my wife's car, and she likes the feature. Otherwise I'd offer you an even swap for yours -- I'd love to get rid of that delay. I may have a spare unit in my basement with a delay built into it. I'll check tonight. The color is maroon, but if that doesn't match your interior, you could just swap the guts.

    I'll get back to you.

So the actual interior lamp contains all the doings neccessary to delay its extinguishment? Interesting.

I actually quite like the feature. It is present (And usefully so) in my father's 1994 Golf so I was quite surprised not to find it in The Volvo, which is a far superior vehicle...

I await the results of your search with interest :)

The Haynes comic's wiring diagram shows a dealy relay residing within the interior light unit in 1989 on 740s. I shall check mine asap to see if there is provision for said relay and then find an appropriate one from the junkyard.

Thanks for all your help. Much appreciated :)

          James,

I found the unit in my basement. There is a circuit board in the lamp housing, but I cannot confirm if it is the delay circuit. I bought it because I needed the map lamp lenses in the front. I've never run power to it.

My 760 has the delay as well. It drives me absolutely nuts. I have to wait to see if I've turned the light off or not. The delay only works when you open the driver's door. No idea if it's self contained or not, but I've got a spare ECC style beige dome light for sale ($20+shipping). The clips are intact and it should fit any 700/900 series car.

As long as the lamp has an unswitched-line going to it too (which our cars do) - it should be easy to incorporate the delay without any additional wiring. Come to think of it, even if it didn't have the unswitched line, you could use a heavy-duty capacitor's discharge to achieve the delay... Lousy design though :)
