So now I have two identical 122s and I'm wondering how I should work the insurance? What do you folks do that own multiple volvos? Should I expect a cheaper rate for the secondary?

Probably not worth it with only two cars but I use a "broadform named" policy. It's just for liability, none of my cars are worth more than about $2K so I don't want comp/collision. Anyway, the policy covers me, for any car I'm driving, whether I own it or not, for liability only. Cost is about $400/year and I can drive any one of the fleet without constantly calling the insurance company and switching cars.
If I had two identical cars, paint and all, I'd be real tempted to run one set of plates and one insurance policy though. If you ever got caught, you'd be screwed but I've been in a few accidents over the years and nobody ever looked at the VIN number on my car to verify it's identity.

Bob,
What company are you with that offered such a policy? I've heard of such, but havn't found a company that offers that. Right now I'm paying insurance on four cars, which is ridiculous when I can only drive one at a time, and I almost never loan my cars out, so never is more than one on the road at a given time....

Hi Matt, It's Viking Insurance of Wisconsin. I know they will write a policy in Colorado but you might have to call around to your local agents to find someone who deals with them. I've turned on several "fleet owners" to this policy and they love it. I highly recommend it if you've got a half dozen running vehicles laying around. Once in a great while, I'll even make a short run in a vehicle without plates. The fine for expired tag is way less than the fine for no insurance. The peace of mind knowing that if you're driving it, it's insured, is great. Also, one card, in the wallet, does it. No more gloveboxes for my proofs of insurance.
By the way. Thanks for making me bring a set of rims and tires to bring home that 544. I put it's old set of rubber on a 122 2 door and drove it 4 miles from the house to the Volvo farm and it was really scary. I think those old Remingtons were fiberglass belted or something but they made the car handle horribly. I would have hated to have those tires on for the long trip home in the black beast.

You don't get any kind of recuced rate? That must be killin' you on insurance alone!?

Oh, I get a reduced rate, but still pricey. I've got two Volvo wagons that a switch between day to day, a pickemup that I like to be able to drive when I need to, and the Jag which I like to be able to drive when I get the urge. The Jag has collision and comp. I also carry a good bit more than the minimum allowed liability. All that comes out to just over $100/month, which isn't too bad I don't think, But still pricey... And I've got some other cars that I would drive from time to time if they were covered.
In your case, generally the first car... your main driver woudl be about $X.XX, and the second should be about 1/2 of the first or so.

"Should I expect a cheaper rate "
Well...you should, but you're not likely to get much of one. They always act like theyre doing you a big favour on multi car rates, but it's not much of a discount, especially considering that you can only drive one at a time.

Most insurance companies offer a discount on multiple cars. In your instance, though, you could pull a quick one and just swap vin plates on whichever one you're taking out ...

I'd rather not do that really. They're different years and totally different paint colors. I've learned the hard way that it's just better to play by the rules in the long run anywat, as much as I hate the built in market insurance companies can depend on... kind of the same thing with tow companies.

In other words then, they're not identical - just similar.
Your call, then.

Ahhh right. Identical models, not identical in looks or paint...
Sorry 'bout that.
