NO START 700 1988

This car just will not start. We have a good spark. We have good fuel pump pressure up to the fuel rail. We tried bypassing the MAP sensor. That did not help. It will fire up with a shot of starting fluid (ether) but then it just dies again. It is not getting the fuel into cylinders. Can anyone tell me how to check that the fuel injector solenoids are operating and are getting the correct voltage? Does anyone know how I test the ECU?? Thanks to you all.........

I would listen to your fuel pumps and make sure both the in-tank pump and main fuel pump are running. Sounds like your timing is fine since it will run on starter fluid, and I'm assuming nothing else changed...you can listen to the rear pump through the gas tank, and you can also connect the leads of your fuel pump relay (see manual of FAQ for the right wires to jump) to get the main pump on.

If your plugs look to be in health condition and you can see spark (use a flash tester to make sure it jumps the 1/4" if necessary) and your distrubutor is sending power to all 4 plugs it is most likely a fuel pressure problem or an injector problem...like the post before said you can listen to the injectors clicking using an engine stethescope or a long screw driver up against your ear while someone cranks the car....watch out when leaning over a turning engine.

    hi,
My question is was it running before .. and then started acting up? If it starts wiht starting fluid then u r ignition is ok.. and when u start engine up with fluid can u hear the injestors making a click click sound..? If not u might need to look into that direction..

Easiest way to check the fuel injectors is to listen to them. Use a long screwdriver held to the body of the injector with the handle pressed to your ear if you don't have a stethescope.

The fuel injectors get their power through the radio supression relay, black about 2" wide, 1" thick and 1.5" tall. You probably have two relays that fit this description, the second relay is for the auxiliary cooling fan. They are usually mounted together on one of the other shock towers, or a bracket attached to the coolant recovery tank. Swithc the relays and see if the problem goes away.

If you only have one relay, check for battery voltage on the connector to the injector. I think it will be the green wire, but not sure. There are only two wires to choose from so it shouldn't be too hard. The other wire (Gray?) is pulsed to ground by the ecu. All four injectors are in parallel and operate at the same time.

      Dan,

That schematic is for the non-US '89 K-jet FI. Do they have one for the LH system, I wonder?

        Bruce,

As Noel said, you need to look beyond the first couple of pages. The diagrams cover quite a few years. Even if you can't come up with a perfect match, the basic knowledge is helpful. Example: I have an '89 760 and I think Volvo chose a different wire color for every wire in that thing, but the circuitry I believe to be almost identical. Still better than a Haynes manual in which I can barely make out anything even when using a magnifyer. By the way to give credit where credit is due: Noel (ndesouza) recently posted the link to this website on the brickboard. I was able to print the diagrams out, but had to use 11 X 17 paper. There is some strange issues with the diagrams, such as some of the diagrams are for left hand drive, but an associated diagram is for right hand drive, but I am sure you can make sense of it.

You might want to try a little further up on the website such as:
        http://www.autoelectric.ru/auto.html

From here you can select Volvo for additional model diagrams or select other makes of car. I have not found much in english beyond the Volvo wiring diagrams. May be fun to play around with one of the on-line translators unless you are fluent with Russian.

        Ciao,
        Dan

All the 89 schematics are available at that link. You just need to scroll down.

          and
          >Noel,

Thanks for clueing me on the schematics. So far I've got by (on 240s) with Bentley info, and have the '93 940 green book. But more is better. Wonder why such good Volvo coverage on a Russian site?

Sounds like maybe the fuel and spark aren't there at the same time. Check for a broken or stripped timing belt by watching the camshaft thru the oil fill hole while someone cranks it over.

Even if it turns, I'd make sure it's at 0° TDC for #1 piston at the same time the crankshaft is, using the reference marks provided.
