Fix or Replace (nostalgic story included) 200 1982

I never thought the day would come when I would consider getting rid of my 240. But alas... the tires are bald, tranny leak, and showing her age after 23 Wisconsin winters.

I purchased the car for $1,000 4 years ago and although I have spent nearly $3,000 in upkeep over those 4 years / 85,0000 miles: tires, exhaust, radiator, brakes, shocks, susp bushings, belts, seals wiring harness, injectors, fuel pumps, and religious changing of air, oil, fuel filter, cap rotor, plugs, etc... she has never ever let me down.

But, like I said, she needs: new summer tires..like 5k ago (i have snows), leak @ overdrive housing gasket, rear main seal leak, front suspension re-bush, struts and ball joints, rust at every door corner, and major rust where vertical trunk sheetmetal meets the bumper. Not to mention major floor pan rust on passanger side. I completely rebuilt the driver side floor pans a year and a half ago.

On top of it all, we are expecting a baby any day. I would love to fix all this stuff and keep on driving. Maybe I'll keep it as a winter car?? Or sell it to a fellow brickster. In the mean time I am looking for a 95 940 in super shape thats ready to go. (my wife drives a '93 945 and we love this car)

Right decision???? I sort of have an emotional attachment to this car, so I guess I just need some help in getting rid of it.

Thanks to all.

I have to agree with sstef- you can't safely keep this car. Even more so with concerns of the new family, but hey, you're important to that family too, so even if you *never* put the wife or baby in the car, you could still be injured in it.
Granted, these cars still do what they're designed to do in a crash- see my pics- but you don't really want to find out do you?

I just picked up a very very solid '89 244 for under $400. It's got 212K and needs a few things , but it's much more solid than the 87 I'm driving.

Part out the 82 on Ebay or here. I know it's tough when you're attached to a car- believe me, I'm used to the idea of being the "last owner" of cars. But when the car's structure is compromised, the choice is made for you. Want to be sure it's time? See if the rust has gotten to the bolts for the center driveshaft support. That's an area that's virtually impossible to fix, and when the driveshaft falls out....

Well the rust makes the decision for you. This is why I bought my wagon in British Columbia. No snow/no salt. There are hardly any "native" 240s in Ontario because of rust. The daily drivers disappeared 10 years ago.
