Leaking transmission...? 200

I've got a '90 245 with 193k miles, I've been watching this leak since last January. At first it was a couple of drips but recently its been getting worse. From what I can tell its coming from where the drive shaft comes out of the transmission. It still shifts fine, no slipping or anything.
I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas what it might be? Or about the cost of a repair like this and if there is anything I can do to help slow it down etc.
Thanks
Andrew

I just replaced my seal and bushing last weekend. It was fairly straight forward and easy. It just takes time. Although I have access to a lift and press. IPD sells a bushing and seal kit that comes with the rear tranny gasket. While you are at it replace your tranny mount (it will needs to come off anyway). The hardest part was the top bolt on the drive shaft. ( I didn't jack the rear of the car as suggested). From start to finish it took me 3 hrs including clean-up. Look in the FAQ and print the procedure. The only thing that was different for me was the speedo cable. I didn't have to disconnect mine.

Good luck.

I agree it is very possibly the tailshaft bushing and seal. I had to replace mine at around 185K. They seem to go between 150-200K...

You didn't mention whether it is a manual or a slushbox. If it is an AW-70 (auto) read on..

However, I have another possibilty. A no-cost one! Check your tranny pan bolts before going after the seal/bushing. Slide under your car so you can access them. Check for looseness. Use a 10mm rachet or wrench. CAREFULLY tighten any loose bolts. Just snug them up. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN! The torque value on them is very low - maybe 15lbs. or so. Cross tighten them. One side, then other, back and forth etc. so pan seals on the gasket evenly. The pan is aluminum which is why they back off eventually and explains the need to be careful tightening.

I had a unfound leak for a long time, I simply chalked it up to a leaking rear main seal in the engine since I have never replaced the rear main. Leak got worse this summer and then my tranny started slipping. Added fluid, researched the problem here on the BB, looked for leaks in various locations but tightening the bolts did the trick for me. No more leaks so far!!

Good luck,

I agree that its likely the output shaft bushing. Take a look at the FAQs:

I had an old automatic BW35 transmission that was leaking a lot.

I tried 'Lucas' brand transmission-leak-stopper in it and it did work for me.
