If your wire from the sensor has a white stripe on it about half way down the wire then replace it. You need one with the yellow stripe which is the upgrade from a known Volvo problem.

You are talking about the engine RPM pick-up sensor that sits on top of the bell housing under the firewall. Used from 1990 up . A little hard to see and reach and usually covered by grease. It's held by a 10 mm screw and can best be reached from the drivers side using a long extension with a 10mm swivel socket. The wires get frayed by the nearby kickdown cble and short out. A new one is $29 from FCP Groton. About $67 from dealer. It plugs right in to the harness and is very easy to replace. If the wires are not too badly deteriorated they can be individually taped and continue in use until you decide to replace.

Sorry I was thinking of the 16 valve engine and changng it on a hot engine.
On the 8 valve it may be a easy from either side.

On my 90 740, it's located slightly off top center toward the PASSENGER (R/H)side of the car. Are you talking about a R/H drive car, as in England?
